Flags of the LGBTIQ Community

Flags have always been an integral part of the LGBTIQ+ movement. They are a apparent representation meant to commemorate progress, advocate for visibility, and amplify the require and drive for collective action. There have been many LGBTIQ+ flags over the years. Some contain evolved, while others are constantly being conceptualized and created.

Rainbow Flag

Created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, the iconic Pride Rainbow flag originally had eight stripes. The colors included pink to represent sexuality, red for healing, yellow for sun, green for serenity with nature, turquoise for art, indigo for agreement, and violet for liveliness. In the years since, the flag now has six colors. It no longer has a pink stripe, and the turquoise and indigo stripes were replaced with royal blue.

Progress Pride Flag

Created in 2018 by nonbinary creator Daniel Quasar, the Progress Pride flag is based on the iconic 1978 rainbow flag. Recently, I was doing some research (scrolling on TikTok in bed at 7 a.m.) and happened across some lesbian information previously unknown to me, a lesbian. Apparently, there is a Pride flag called the Moon Lesbian Flag, meant as a contrast to the Sun Womxn loving womxn Flag, which is distinct entirely from the typical Lesbian Pride Flag I was familiar with. Own a look:

Exhibit A: The only Lesbian Pride Flag I knew of up until this week.

Exhibit B: Moon Lesbian Flag

Exhibit C: Sun Lesbian Flag

I simply had to do an investigaytion into these divine lesbian flag offerings. The results? Pretty inconclusive and incoherent. You see, a lot of these riffs on various Pride flags are just done for fun. People have lay their own spins on a slew of queer woman flags. I even create a TikTok that displays a “Mean Lesbian Flag” and a “Nice Sapphic Flag.” If anyone would like to design a Mommi Lesbian Flag and a Daddy Lesbian Flag, I’m listening!

As far as the Moon Lesbian Flag goes, there’s a bounty of explanations for why it exists. Some utter it’s for closeted lesbians, others claim it for femme lesbians, others assign it to lesbians who posses

A Horniman Lesbian Flag

An early lesbian flag and symbolism

In 1999, gay graphic planner, Sean Campbell created one of the first lesbian flags. It contains an inverted black triangle that repurposes a Nazi symbol used during World War ll. Under the Nazi regime, women who did not conform to Nazi ideals would be sent to concentration camps and marked with an upside down black triangle badge for identification and men would be forced to wear the matching in pink.

The double axe – acknowledged as labrys – represents the power and feminism of homosexual women and was adopted into the lesbian people in the 1970s. The labrys is also featured within Greek and Roman mythology, associated with Laphria, Artemis and Determis. The axe-like weapon was frequently seen in depictions of women warriors like Amazons. These women would combat as men did and are seen as a symbol of feminism.

Violets were another early woman loving woman symbol, dating help to c.600 BC. The poet Sappho described her girlfriend as wearing a garland of violets. In the middle of the last century, lesbian women would give violets to women as an indication of ‘sapphic desire’.
