The GayBCs

March 26, 2023
I was a bit stunned to be honest. I saw this in Barnes and Noble while looking for something completely different, which I never found. I read it. I was mortified. Why is Dr. Seuss the scapegoat for evil, yet a manual that promotes sexual individuality to toddlers an preschoolers, not? I'm just waiting for the book titled, "How to cut off your own "Pe..." (I'll let you finish off the potential title - and if you consider I'm being ludicrous, inspect out the movie "Idiocracy" - it's terribly painful to watch, but you'll find some valid reference points). Kids are growing up in an increasingly confusing world and this certainly isn't helping. I'm all for inclusion, but these topics for small kids are just more noise, which parents then have to explain. If you're trying to be inclusive, you be inclusive. Don't drag your kids into your political agendas and confuse the heck out of them or put confusing ideas in their head. Let the children play and yes, encourage kindness. The topic will likely come up in discussion at some point later on when they're older, unless they've already been exposed to unsavoury and inappropriate behaviours, or, alternatively, they acquire gay

The GayBCs

M.L. Webb. Quirk, $14.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-68369-162-4

“A is for ally,” begins this abecedarian introduction to LGBTQ terms. With each letter, rhyming lines define various words, some more specific to the topic than others: “F is for FAMILY./ Related or found,/ they’ll stick by your side through your ups and your downs”; “Q is for QUEER./ An inclusive term./ It’s used to show pride,/ unite and affirm!” As enormous letters loom in the background, four children, two white and two darker-skinned, play and carry on various everyday activities in friendly vignettes that are sometimes disconnected from the terms they illustrate. Some definitions are less succesful than others—“intersex” (“Some are born with the parts/ of both a teen and girl”), for example—limiting the usability of this picture book. Ages 4–8. [em](Oct.) [/em]Correction: An earlier version of this review indicated that the volume is a board book; it is a picture book.
