Original 'Big Gay Ice Cream Shop' location closes indefinitely due to pandemic
EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A popular ice cream shop in the East Village has closed indefinitely due to the pandemic.
'Big Homosexual Ice Cream Shop' on 7th Street between Street A and 1st Ave. has a 'for rent' sign in the front window.
The shop had been closed since New York City went on 'pause' in March. Other locations in the West Village and on the Upper West Side did reopen.

Co-founder Doug Quint confirmed the closure but did not extend any other immediate comments.

This outpost had been closed since the PAUSE went into effect last March ... the Big Gay locations in the West Village and UWS did reopen.
The popular shop opened in September 2011 with a memorable array of amusement, including an all-bassoon band, Bea Arthur lookalikes and Anthony Bourdain dressed as a priest blessing the shop.
This was the very first location for the business that started with an ice cream truck. Since then, Quint and co-founder Bryan Petroff authored a cookbook on frozen treats and launched a pint-sized product line in grocery stores.

The East Village is behind losing its charm—one storefront at a time.
It was announced that the eminent Big Gay Ice Cream at 125 East 7th Road will not be reopening after an extensive shutdown during the pandemic. The beloved frozen cure shop has been closed since Protest of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic truly began its destructive reign throughout the city. Still, many in the area held out hope that the shutters would once again rise and the trademark rainbow colors would gleam from its East 7th Street and Avenue A location.

Obscured by metal shutters, the inside of the shop has been completely gutted, leaving an vacant void and a poster on the window announcing the space is for rent.
This is particularly disheartening for the East Village collective since this was the company’s very first brick and mortar location after they had been serving ice cream from a truck for two y

Things moved quickly for what was originally Big Male lover Ice Cream Truck after their 2009 beginning. By 2011 the business was really blowing up and lines were long at their truck when it parked in Union Square, and they looked to open an actual storefron
