Being gay is harder than being black in Hollywood: Chiwetel Ejiofor

Chiwetel Ejiofor argues a person’s sexuality isn’t anyone else’s business, and if the individual wants to, they should be able to declare their preference without fear of it affecting their opportunities in life in any way.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave star, believes Hollywood still marginalises people because of their sexuality. The industry has been accused of a lack of diversity following the 2016 Academy Awards nominations, where no African-American star or director was nominated for a top honour for the second year in a row, but the actor “believes it’s harder for someone to succeed if they’re lgbtq+ than if they’re dark. “I hope this changes (but) I think it’s probably harder to be gay,” he said.

“I believe sexuality is still marginalised in a way that is pretty open. I think it’s tough. I think for one’s have peace of mind, for one’s own sense of self and psychological health, I feel like that’s the horrible thing about ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’... Because it produces

Steve, how strange is it that something that’s happened to you in genuine life has turned out like this?

STEVE PATEMAN: It is very emotional to be here now with all these stars and watching the film was equally emotional. I definitely shed some tears.

Chiwetel, you have had two years work come out in a span of 7 to 14 days, how does that feel?

CHIWETEL EJIOFOR: It feels good, I am proud of all of them. They are all good projects on their own, especially since they are all very different, so I will hopefully be seen in a different light each time.

Chiwetel how did the shoes inspire or hinder your performance?

CHIWETEL EJIOFOR: I was lucky, I had a lot of wonderful people around me who knew what they were doing, so they helped me and showed me the way.

Chiwetel, did you walk around in those shoes a lot in private for practice?

CHIWETEL EJIOFOR: Yes, I ruined my floors, in fact I had to have my floors redone.

Mr. Ejiofor, how carry out you feel about the fact that you are the last black star to have been nominated for an Academy Award?

I ponder that’s crazy! And this is going to be the case right up until early next year… It seems like a very long time since I was nominated, you know what I mean? It’s a very drawn-out period of hour that has an absence of dark males or anybody of color, really, being considered to have been fine enough to be in that arena. I hope that’s not something that’s a fixture, you know? I wish I don’t convey that mantle very far.

The Academy changed the rules in order to promote more diversity. Undertake you think that is a step in the right direction?

Hopefully that will bring about some change by the time next year comes around. We have to develop proper apparatus so that people don’t feel that they are unfairly treated. I think having real diversity in film is going to increase and improve our sympathy of different people, different cultures, alternative communities.
