Rio police ID suspect in attack on Netflix same-sex attracted Jesus filmmakers

RIO DE JANEIRO — Police in Rio de Janeiro have identified one of the people responsible for a gasoline bomb attack targeting satirists behind a Christmas program on Netflix that some critics have described as blasphemous.

Officers carried out a search warrant Tuesday morning and found money, a fake firearm, ammunition, a “political-philosophical” shirt and computers, police said in a written statement. Police also had a warrant for the suspect's arrest, but he remains at large.

Police did not immediately emit other details, including the suspect's name, but planned a news conference Tuesday morning.

The Christmas Eve strike on an empty video production house didn't injure anyone but came as a shock even in a country accustomed to violence. A video circulating days later on social media showed three men claiming responsibility for the attack, and said they had targeted Brazilian comedy group Porta dos Fundos for its Portuguese-language program.

The comedy group’s short motion picture, "The First Temptation of Christ," depicts Jesus returning home on his 30th birthday and insinuates he is gay. Religious groups bristled

ALAMEDA (KPIX 5) -- Millions of people have signed a petition for Netflix to immediately extract a Brazilian production that depicts Jesus as a queer man.

The movie is called "The First Temptation of Christ." The petition on change.org has received more than two million signatures as of Wednesday bedtime and it wants the parody removed from the Los Gatos-based streaming giant's selection.

The petition is also asking the film company, "Porta dos Fundos," to be held responsible for the crime of "villainous faith." It's also asking for a general retraction, saying the film has seriously offended Christians.

The petition has the objective of reaching three million signatures. But on Christmas Trunk Lane in Alameda, people were preaching tolerance.

"The idea of Jesus represents a lot of unlike people and a lot of unlike things so it allows people to feel included when they need to have the comfort of the church," said resident Shawn.

"Tolerance is a creation of new ideas. It doesn't represent that tradition is lost, but it can be tweaked," said Justine.

"If you believe in Jesus and the communication that he stands for, what difference does his sexual orientation make?" asked Clay.

The star of Netflix's Christmas special featuring a gay Jesus called the backlash 'homophobic,' as a petition calling for its removal approaches 2 million signatures

The star of the Netflix Christmas comedy special "The First Temptation of Christ," which depicts Jesus as gay, has weighed in on the conservative backlash.

Fábio Porchat — who is also the cofounder of the Brazilian YouTube comedy group behind the special, Porta dos Fundos — told Variety that the criticism was "homophobic."

"For some Catholics here in Brazil, it's okay if Jesus is a lousy guy, uses drugs, that's no problem," Porchat said. "The problem is he's gay. No, he can't be homosexual. And that's appealing because Jesus is everything. God is black and alabaster and gay and straight. God is everything. It's more homophobic to be insulted by a gay Jesus than to make Jesus special."

The Netflix description for "The First Temptation of Christ" says that Jesus "brings a surprise guest to join the family." Porchat plays Orlando, the "surprise guest."

The 46-minute, Portuguese-language special first debuted on Netflix Brazil on December 3. Since then, the backlash from many conservative Christians has been im

Police are investigating a fire-bomb attack on the Rio de Janeiro office of a production company behind a controversial Christmas particular aired on streaming service Netflix.

The episode, by comedy group Porta dos Fundos, depicts a gay Jesus bringing a boyfriend house to meet his family.

More than 2.3m people own signed an online petition to remove the motion picture.

A video circulating online appears to show a far-right religious group claiming responsibility for the attack.

In it, a group wearing ski masks and naming itself as the "Popular Nationalist Insurgency Command of the Large Brazilian Integralist Family", appear to invade the production company offices with Molotov cocktails.

A declaration, read with a digitally disguised voice, criticises Netflix and describes the production as blasphemous.

It also includes flags with nationalist and fascist connotations, Reuters news agency reports.

The video circulated on Christmas Day - one night after Porta dos Fundos (Back Door) announced their office had been attacked.

new Portuguese-language Netflix comedy The First Temptation of Christ has made earth headlines after sparking controversy and anger for depicting Jesus Christ as a gay man.

Created by Brazilian YouTube comedy group Porta dos Fundos, the feature ─ which portrays Jesus bringing his presumed partner Orlando home to encounter Mary and Joseph ─ is released on Netflix on Dec. 3 and is now also ready for Netflix subscribers, including in Indonesia.

While many Christian religious leaders in Brazil have lambasted the film, Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) chairman Rev. Gomar Gultom has instead called on Christians in Indonesia not to worry.

“I haven’t watched the film, I have just read the synopsis,” Gomar told The Jakarta Post.

“Even though I highly respect freedom of speech and [the creators’] creativity, I still long for that people would not disrespect other people or communities, much less making jokes about certain [religious] beliefs,” he added.

Gomar said he was aware that the film was a comedy and therefore in order to interpret Jesus’ character as shown in the movie, people were supposed to see it through a
