The third 'Fantastic Beasts' movie finally addresses Dumbledore's sexuality front and center — nearly 15 years after J.K. Rowling first revealed he's gay

In 2007, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling made a remark that would echo in the franchise's fandom for years to approach. Speaking at Carnegie Hall that year, she said that she had "always thought of Dumbledore as gay" — and that the relationship between him and his teenage friend Gellert Grindelwald had been romantic.

Since then, Dumbledore's sexuality has only explicitly existed outside of any of the franchise's main properties, and Rowling's words had never been confirmed on screen. She hinted in 2016 that the character's queerness would play a role in the "Fantastic Beasts" films, telling reporters to "watch this space," Second Magazine reported at the time.

Almost fifteen years after Rowling first confirmed Dumbledore's sexuality, it's finally made it to the big screen.

Dumbledore Will Somehow Not Be “Explicitly” Gay in the Fantastic Beasts Movie About Him Fighting His Ex-Boyfriend

Here’s some news that will make you long for the days of underwhelming, “exclusively gay” moments in mainstream blockbusters: David Yates, who is directing the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Locate Them, has revealed that Dumbledore’s sexuality will not be referenced in the new movie. Via Entertainment Weekly:

“Not explicitly,” Yates replied when asked if the film makes it clear that Dumbledore is gay. “But I believe all the fans are aware of that. He had a very intense relationship with Grindelwald when they were young men. They fell in care with each other’s ideas, and ideology and each other.”

The decision to retain Dumbledore in the closet is a puzzling one, and not just because it’s weirdly regressive that the only gay ethics in the Harry Potter universe is the one whose sexuality has not been established in the text. (Lord knows there are plenty of “explicitly” straight characters!) We only know Dumbledore is lgbtq+ because J.K. Rowling has said so. She saved that revelation for after the entire Harry Potter series was published, explaining
