Gay travel turkey

Long named as the gathering point between East and West, Turkey is a wild blend of Middle Eastern textures and Islamic culture complimented by European trends and ever-evolving liberal views. When you ponder of Turkey you may think of the ornate Ottoman-era mosques rising from Istanbul’s pastel skyline or even the enlivening chaos of Ankara’s colourful lane markets. But to truly discover Turkey, one must veer from the well-worn path, journeying to far-flung ancient ports on the Aegean Sea, floating through the fairy-tale world of Cappadocia and beyond. Uncover vast and hidden queer Turkey with us today.

Going to Turkey? Here’s every LGBTQ traveller needs to know

Turkey is a pleasant country in Western Asia that many travellers call on for its beautiful beaches, breathtaking landscapes, and historic cities. It is a fairly conservative country, which is reflected in its attitudes towards LGBTQ people. For gay travellers in Turkey, there are protection concerns to be mindful of when it comes to public expression, both in the cities and in rural areas. But don’t let that halt you from exploring the country and visiting its vibrant LGBTQ communities.

Safer queer travel in Turkey

To be clear, Turkey does not outlaw being gay. In fact, it has been legal since the founding of modern Turkey in 1923. However, general bans on “offences against widespread morality” are often used against LGBTQ expression. Even heterosexual couples are advised not to publicly exhibit their affection, and LGBTQ couples are advised to be extra careful. LGBTQ people are not protected by anti-discrimination laws, and a general rule of thumb of “don’t demand, don’t tell” is the safest way to explore the country outside of LGBTQ-specific areas.

Days 1-3: Istanbul

We will arrive in Istanbul and be transferred to our first hotel. Later this evening, we will meet with our tour mentor and enjoy our welcome dinner and orientation.

We’ll spend the next two days exploring the metropolis, which is dramatically situated upon three waterways: the Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Golden Horn. Istanbul’s exotic flavor comes alive in its magnificent mosques with their minarets, bustling bazaars, and boulevards and bridges. We’ll have ample occasion to soak in the atmosphere of the city and enjoy its many exciting vistas.

We’ll commence at Hagia Sophia, known for its magnificent dome. Then we will tour the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, more familiarly known as the Blue Mosque. It is known for its magnificent paneling of over 20,000 blue Iznik tiles.

After lunch, on our first full date in Istanbul, we’ll wind down with a visit to a traditional Turkish Bath (hammam).

No remain in Istanbul is complete without an unforgettable boat excursion through the Bosphorus. This is the winding strait that separates Europe and Asia and connects the Mediterranean and Black Seas. We start our seco

Gastronomy Guide

Turkey excels in food! Of course, there’s the beloved kebabs—everyone’s favorite late-night alcohol absorbent—but Turkish cuisine offers so much more. Meat holds a prominent place in the Turkish diet and comes in a range of flavors. One trendy dish is kofte, balls of beef and lamb served up in various ways – such as in a casserole or pie. Then there’s meze, Turkey’s version of tapas, featuring a collection of dishes often served before a meal and can include meatballs, yogurts, dips and of course warm fresh bread. Meza is a great way to try a range of national and local delicacies without committing to a full meal.

As for desserts, there’s baklava – a yummy pastry filled with nuts, honey and syrup or the popular kind, Turkish delight. Known throughout the world, the version found in Turkey is far tastier than the artificial version found in shops around the globe and comes in a variety of flavors, ranging from dusty rose to pistachio.
