The growth of Cigarettes after Sex has been a slow burn. A heartbroken drive on Valentine’s Day 10 years ago, with Sade on echo , provoked the interrogate in frontman and songwriter, Greg Gonzalez’ mind, “How complete I make a record that feels like that?”.
Borrowing erotic romanticism from the immortal RUSSH male, Leonard Cohen and taking themes of Bob Dylan’s narrative vignettes, Gonzalez and his band possess created a sound that is fearless in both integrity and simplicity. Ever consistent in lyrical themes, Gonzalez has given us a third album, X’s, about his personal experiences with relationships and one in particular that lasted four years. RUSSH spoke to Gonzalez about his lyrical style, permanent influences and music as medicine.
Whilst Gonzalez has an androgynous voice that floats above reverb drenched instrumentation, his latest log, X’s, focuses on the heavy feeling of heartbreak and wanting to crystalise those memories in art to forever remember and study from. When writing such a personal and honest document, I’m curious to know whether Gonzalez finds this confronting to lay it all on the line or whether it's a compulsion.

Chilean gymnast Tomás González, who participated in the 2012, 2016 and 2021 Summer Olympics, has come out publicly as a lgbtq+ man.
“I guess it’s not a topic anymore, but yes, I’m gay,” he said in an interview with the Spanish website El Desconcierto. “If it’s about making it public, I prefer to do it in this book.”
Now 36, Gonzalez realized he was gay when he was in his mid-20s and details this journey in his autobiography which was released last month.
In an Instagram post in June, he wrote in part: “It’s been an incredible process and very healing in so many ways. I have decided to share my sporting and personal experiences, some that I have never common on media, in request to inspire everyone who has the illusion to be better in both areas,”

In an exclusive conversation Greg Gonzalez of Cigarettes After Sex, talks to us about his Indian visit for Lollapalooza, his love for Daler Mehendi’s iconic song Bolo Ta Ra Ra and his breakup with writer-girlfriend Nour Petite.
Over a course of a decade, musician Greg Gonzalez and his ambient pop band have released around 11 singles, 2 albums and 1 EP. Their discography by and large emanates explicit details about Gonzalez and his partners. There’s a reason he calls his harmony “erotic lullabies’’, as he has been an uncover book especially when it comes to his intimate life. His last acknowledged relationship was with author Nour Petite, the two parted ways last June, withal, he reveals.

When Cigarettes After Sex frontman Greg Gonzalez sat down to Lenny Abrahamson’s thoughtfully explicit adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People in 2020, he felt he was looking back at a cracked reflection of his retain artistic impulses.
“In Normal People, they are in love,” he says. “The sexuality is included because it’s significant to the story. That’s how I write music. I couldn’t tell an honest story about my own like life without including sexuality and having that in there in a way that feels genuine.”
There are bands whose names are a calculated exercise in misdirection – and then there is Cigarettes After Sex, who live up to their moniker with music framed by Gonzalez’s granular eye for erotic detail. He’s an mature romantic but, much like Leonard Cohen in his doomed ladies’ man prime, he feels it is important to acknowledge and honor – and occasionally lament – the sensual side of love.
“You can talk about sexuality in a personal way,” Gonzalez says. “My contribution to music could be to say: if you wish to write about it, write about it.”
