Agatha All Along Promises to Be Marvel's 'Gayest Proposal Yet'

IT'S BEEN OVER three years since the mind-bending Marvel Studios series WandaVision made its debut on Disney+, and that show's scene-stealing villain is finally taking center-stage. Agatha All Along follows Agatha Harkness, the nosy neighbour who was revealed to be an ancient (and fourth wall-breaking) witch, as she sets off on a quest to walk the fabled "Witches' Road" and regain her powers.

If you saw Kathryn Hahn's arch, campy performance in WandaVision then you already have a pretty excellent idea of what the tone in Agatha All Along (which comes from the same creative team) will be. At the show's premiere this week, its cast teased that this might actually be the gayest thing to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—and not just because Broadway legend Patti Lupone is on the lineup.

During Marvel Studio's Hall H panel at Comic-Con in 2019, Tessa Thompson confirmed that her character, Valkyrie, will be openly queer in the upcoming film, "Thor: Love and Thunder."

"As fresh king [of Asgard], she needs to find her queen," Thompson said.

In the comics' "The Fearless Defenders" series, Valkyrie is clearly bisexual and has a relationship with the female anthropologist Annabelle Riggs.

Thus far, despite Thompson's efforts, Valkyrie's queerness hasn't been made clear onscreen. "Thor: Ragnarok" filmmakers cut a scene that included a gal walking out of Valkyrie's bedroom, which would include made her sexuality more explicit.

"In the canon, yeah, she is bisexual," Thompson told Variety. "You see her with both women and men, so that was my intention in playing her."

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously revealed the Marvel Cinematic Universe will fetch its first two LGBTQ superheroes. Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo acquire now confirmed an announcement will happen sooner rather than later.
