Gay Pakistan: Where sex is available and relationships are difficult
But life can be even more difficult for gay women. Expressions of female sexuality are shunned in the public sphere, even among heterosexuals. So how do gay women make their lives work?
In Lahore, twenty-something lesbian couple Beena and Fatima hold come up with an inventive way to wait together.
Beena, although not publicly "out", says she is optimistic about the future. "I think we'll possess a marriage of convenience. I know some lgbtq+ guys and maybe we'll do a deal so we put in capital together and they possess one portion of the house and we'll include another portion. We may as well do that."
Fatima, who contributes to an invitation-only online gay help group, believes it's only "a matter of time" before Pakistan begins to debate gay rights openly, and people declare their homosexuality with pride.
"You can't stay in the closet forever. You have to come out. It's inevitable," she says.
Beena is less hopeful.
"Gay rights in America came after women had basic rights. You don't see that in Pakistan. You are not allowed a difference
How can a meaning of belonging be forged in a setting where one’s existence is forbidden? That is the question that LSE’s Dr Centner and his co-author Harvard’s Manoel Pereira Neto explore in their groundbreaking research into Dubai’s expatriate same-sex attracted men’s nightlife.
But it was not an easy topic to research. Dr Centner explains: “It's an illegal, or criminalised, identity and put of behaviours and practices, so in a very general sense, it's a taboo. And taboo subjects are very often under-researched, sometimes because people possess a hard period gaining access, gaining that trust, but also because, even if people obtain that access, there could be significant repercussions for themselves as researchers, or for the people who are the research participants.
“As two queer researchers, we were able to enter the worlds of relatively privileged Western gay expatriates. Secrecy is often the norm, but the field was familiar to us, through previous visits and research projects.”
These were indeed ‘parties’ ...[but] not bars identified as homosexual. Not a unattached venue’s webpage uses the word ‘gay’ or related euphemisms, nor do they hint at targeting
Gay pimp provided 14-year-old boys for male customers
NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A lgbtq+ man has been arrested at a resort in Sikhiu district for allegedly procuring five 14-year-old schoolboys to provide sex services for male customers.
Identified only as "Phakphum", he was taken into custody by police led by Pol Col Jiradet Phrasawang, deputy chief of the Anti-Human Trafficking Suppression Division, on Thursday evening.
Five schoolboys, all aged 14 years, were also taken into protective custody.
During interrogation, Mr Phakphum allegedly admitted he had persuaded the boys to provide sex services for male customers for cash. Customers paid the boys 2,000 baht a second. He kept 50% of it.
The suspect said he spent some of the money buying sex from boys. He admitted he was infected with HIV and was being treated, police said.
Mr Phakphum will face human trafficking charges, police said. The five boys were now help in the care of their parents.
