BREAKING: Gov. DeSantis Signs Extreme Preemption Bill

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest queer woman , gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, condemns Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for signing SB 170, which discourages cities from passing non-discrimination ordinances by raising the barriers to proposing ordinances and making it easier for individuals and businesses to challenge ordinances in court.

According to the latest data this year from PRRI, support for LGBTQ+ rights is on the rise in Florida and nationwide: 80% of Florida residents support nondiscrimination protections, and 66% of Florida residents oppose refusal of service on religious grounds. About eight in ten Americans (80%) favor laws that would defend LGBTQ+ people against discrimination in jobs, public accommodations, and housing. This reflects a dramatic increase in the proportion of Americans who support nondiscrimination protections since 2015, when it was 71%.

Florida is enacting a record six expressly anti-LGBTQ+ laws this year, more than the last seven years combined

Tallahassee, Florida – Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, same-sex attracted, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, condemns Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for signing a slate of anti-LGBTQ+ bills constructed to scale assist the freedoms of LGBTQ+ people and other vulnerable communities.

Florida is enacting a record six expressly anti-LGBTQ+ bills into law this year, more than the last seven years combined.

Today, Gov. DeSantis signed HB 1069, which silences educators by prohibiting any manual on sexual orientation or gender self from Pre-K through 8th grade, SB 254, an excessive gender affirming nurture ban, and HB 1521, an anti-trans bathroom bill.

Florida Gov. and presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis said the NAACP is pulling a "stunt" by calling Florida hostile to Black Americans, other minorities and Diverse people. 

The NAACP has issued a warning that Florida is "openly hostile for African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals." In an interview with DeSantis, CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell asked if he would represent the entire country, and whether everyone could feel welcome in DeSantis' America.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a slate of legislation Wednesday targeting the LGBTQ group, including restrictions on transgender health concern, content on LGBTQ identities in schools, transgender bathroom operate and drag performances in the state.

What the unused laws say

Florida express bill SB 254 will restrict gender-affirming healthcare for trans people under the age of 18, allowing the express to take temporary custody over any child who receives such treatment.

"Sex-reassignment prescriptions and procedures are prohibited for patients younger than 18 years of age," the legislation reads.

Gender-affirming care has been found to be associated with improved mental health of transgender adolescents and teenagers, according to research in the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA Pediatrics.
