HRC lists Trump's persistent attacks against the LGBTQ community after the RNC claims he's taken "unprecedented steps" in support of the community.
HRC President Alphonso David: “The RNC is hallucinating and moving forward misleading and disingenuous rhetoric. Yes, Trump has taken many ‘unprecedented’ steps, but those steps contain been to undermine and eliminate rights protecting LGBTQ people, not empower us. Appointing a tiny handful of lgbtq+ people out of thousands of nominations and making a very few -- and unfullfilled -- pledges can hardly qualify as accomplishments. Don’t gaslight us. The Trump-Pence administration is the most virulently anti-LGBTQ administration in decades -- the RNC cannot put lipstick on a pig.”
Here’s a list of attacks the Trump-Pence administration has levied against LGBTQ people:

June 13, 2024In the second installment of the ACLU’s election 2024 memo series, our experts detail the threats a potential second Trump administration poses to the LGBTQ community, particularly transgender people.
This piece was published before Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to represent the Democratic Party. No significant facts include been changed or added.
Donald Trump’s administration initiated a sustained, years-long effort to erase protections for LGBTQ people. This included an strive to “define ‘transgender’ out of existence,” erode protections for transgender students and workers, and weaken access to gender-affirming health care that most transgender people already struggled to access.
While President Joe Biden’s administration reversed much of the Trump-era abuses, just last month on the campaign track, Trump vowed to dismantle a unused Biden administration policy that will provide prote
At a news conference on August 8, 2024, former President Trump criticized the record of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, chosen last week as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, including Walz’s support for LGBTQ people (record here). Trump claimed Walz was “heavy into the gender nonconforming world,” without detail on what he meant, or recognition that transgender people are part of everyone’s world.
The rhetoric matched Trump’s comments to Fox News the day before: “He’s very heavy into gender diverse. Anything transgender he thinks is great, and he’s not where the state is on anything.”
GLAAD’s Voter Poll shows a majority of voters of all parties oppose candidates who campaign against transgender people.
Trump’s own record shows he has heavy interest in targeting and restricting gender diverse people and plans to continue this record if elected.
Trump’s 2024 platform on transgender Americans includes:
- Outlawing gender-affirming care for minors at the federal level, according to his “Agenda 47”
- Using the government to probe and potentially halt transsexual health care. “Upon my inauguration, I will straightforward the FDA to convene an independent outside panel to investigate whether transg

Nearly 60 years ago, comedian Lenny Bruce was arrested for saying “forbidden” words in his stand-up show.[1] A few years later, George Carlin carried on the tradition and was arrested for a routine on the “seven words you can’t say on television.”[2]
What was transgressive then, and what subjected Bruce and Carlin to arrest, is less than shocking today and has, with the election of Donald J. Trump as US president, become normalized and transformed into what has been called “middle-finger politics.”[3]
A large difference, though, is that the words Bruce and Carlin used, which may have offended the conscience of many people (although limited to those paying to see their shows), were not part of a political circus inquiring to erase the identities and restrict the human rights and civil liberties of millions of Americans, as well as hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide.[4]
Since his inauguration, President Trump has launched a blizzard of executive orders upending government programs affecting science, public health, the environment, trade, education, sports, and
