Pervasive discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people in Indian hospitals

Discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans person, queer, intersex, asexual, and others) is rampant in healthcare services in India, a recent examine has found. Stigma and discrimination against people of diverse sexual orientations and gender expressions acts as a barrier to accessing healthcare and violates human rights.

The qualitative analyze by Lakshya Arora, Dr PM Bhujang and Professor Muthusamy Sivakami was published in Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters.

In-depth interviews were held with 15 self-identified LGBTQIA+ people who had sought healthcare services in six hospitals in the major cities of Delhi and Mumbai and with 23 cisgender heterosexual employees of those hospitals. In each metropolis, one hospital each in the general, private, and non-profit sector participated.

LGBT Adults’ Experiences with Discrimination and Health Care Disparities: Findings from the KFF Survey of Racism, Discrimination, and Health

Past research shows that LGBT adults face increased challenges when it comes to mental health outcomes and access to protect, experiences with serious mental health issues (particularly among trans adults), their physical health (including higher rates of disability among younger LGBT adults), and barriers to accessing and affording needed care. These negative experiences often occur at higher rates among LGBT adults who are younger, lower income, women, or report chronic illness or disability (for more detail on the demographics of LGBT adults, see Appendix). The Biden administration has issued recent executive orders aimed at combatting discrimination and disparities affecting LGBT adults, however, an increasing number of states contain enacted policies seeking to restrict access to certain types of care for LGBT people, with youth access to gender affirming care being particularly impacted.
