Cathedral City Celebrates Diversity with LGBT Days

 

Move over, Palm Springs Pride. There’s a new celebration in town.

The first-ever Cathedral City LGBT Days opens April 3 as part of a three-day celebration that begins with an opening night party at the new Festival Lawn, 68600 E. Palm Canyon Drive. There will also be free performances by the Palm Springs Same-sex attracted Men's Chorus and Simeon Den’s Dance Troupe, a Rocky Horror Picture Show sing-a-long at the Desert Cinemas UltraMAX Theatre, and a Bunny Bar Hop with free shuttle services courtesy of Fiat of Palm Springs.

In addition, there are pool parties, dance parties, an Easter egg hunt for kids, and a costume-themed aid race.

Communications/Events Manager Chris Parman says the concept of the multiple-day event was simply to commemorate diversity in Cathedral Municipality.

“We have a grand LGBT population. Three out of five council members are openly gay,” he says. “Cathedral City used to be the center of gay life in the Coachella Valley until the 1980s, when the growth mostly went to Palm Springs.”

Annual Greater Palm Springs Pride Events Spotlight the City and Feature Largest Event Festival in Southern California from November 6-8, 2015.

The 29th annual Pride celebration, held November 6-8, 2015 in downtown Palm Springs, will be the largest demonstration of equality and diversity ever seen in the Coachella Valley.  Considered to be one of the most scenic Pride celebrations in the world, it’s also home to the largest Pride Festival in Southern California, with attendance expected to pass the 140,000 mark. The Greater Palm Springs Pride Celebration includes a free block party, two-day festival, parade, and twenty-five official events.

The global theme of this year’s Pride, “Color Our Planet With Pride,” was selected to show support for all LGBTQ people in communities across the globe. The parade and festival provide a platform to reflect on the advances made in the equality movement and raise insight and stand against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender individuality and gender expression.

“Nat’s work is inspired by a midcentury modern aesthetic. His work is eclectic, Americana-inspired, even a bit kitschy in the optimal possible way. Nat really hit it out of the park,” said Ryan.

The poster is colorful, whimsical, and incorporates the most iconic sites of Palms Springs from the Tram to Windmills to Pool Parties. The art will be used to promote Palm Springs Identity festival in approximately 20 magazines from local publications to magazines in Toronto, Los Angeles, Seattle, Munich and London. Additionally, the art will be used on dozens of websites, as well as promotional fliers, internet graphics and on Palm Springs Event emblematic merchandise to help market and promote the event.

“Great art is amazing, but this art also has a job to undertake and that is to inspire, invite and reach our guests and receive them to give back to Palm Springs Pride this November,” said Ryan. Over 140,000 guests are expected to attend Palm Springs Pride events in 2015. The Greater Palm Springs Pride Festival and Parade is the only free major Pride Festival in Southern California.

Palm Springs Pride organizers announced a traditional slate of in-person Pride events for the 35th annual LGBTQ celebration scheduled for November 1 – 7, 2021. The Pride parade and festival featuring multiple stages of live entertainment and a vendor marketplace will return to downtown Palm Springs.

The announcement, coming as the COVID-19 crisis subsides, sets the stage for California’s only large-scale, in-person Pride event to move forward in 2021. Providing a space for the community to accumulate after the stress, uncertainty, and isolation of the pandemic is expected to attract record attendance to Palm Springs. In 2019, Pride Week attracted an estimated 140,000 attendees and generated a $28 million direct spending economic impact for area hotels, shops, restaurants, and other local businesses.
