The Gay Superhero in ‘Eternals’ Is ‘What Audiences Include Been Waiting For,’ Says GLAAD (Guest Column)
LGBTQ comic book and superhero fans have long been waiting to see themselves reflected in the pages and stories of the heroes they love. While progress has been made in the books themselves, that content has often been minimized or entirely erased when it comes to adapting those stories for the big screen. Now, in 2021, all that is finally beginning to change. Most notably, this week’s release of “Eternals,” which features the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first ever LGBTQ superhero, is a powerful step forward for the genre, one that will hopefully pave a new path for LGBTQ inclusion on the massive screen.

Queer heroes in the pages of comics contain made plenty of headlines this year alone. Identifiable and iconic heroes including those who take up the mantle of Superman, Green Lantern, Robin, and a new Captain America all had comic stories exploring their characters’ queerness. All of...

WARNING: SPOILERS

In 2021 the LGBTQ community was happy to see the first on-screen gay couple making headway in the Marvel movie titled, Eternals. Contrary to popular doctrine, this is not the first time a homosexual character has been introduced into the marvel space. At the end of Avengers Endgame, there was a support group gathering after the snap or blip, and that included a man talking about his partner and how they’ve been dealing with the loss. They possess put out statements apologizing for their lack of diversity in the past, and I think they are going to execute a better job at it in the coming future.

That being said, the character, Phastos played by Brian Tyree Henry, had very little screen hour compared to other characters and even less with his partner. It is still a major milestone for the LGBTQ people to have its first openly gay superhero, but I was expecting there to be more of a focus on his character. Instead, it almost felt like Marvel wanted to put all their eggs in one basket, so to speak, as far as diversity goes, and thus was unable to give enough screen time to all the new superheroes.

I regrettably hold to agree with the sca

Eternals Finally Fixes Disney's Huge LGBTQ+ Problem

Warning: Contains spoilers for Eternals.

The MCU’s Eternals goes a extended way to fixing Disney and Marvel’s long-standing problems when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation in their movies. The initial conversations around it seemed promising; production members often talked about the inclusion of Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) as the MCU’s first openly lgbtq+ superhero well before the release. However, Disney’s history with promising true Homosexual representation but offering only queerbaiting or hints kept many from being too optimistic about the portrayal.

In the run-up to its emit, Marvel’s Eternals was the target of a review bomb on IMDb adv before its emit. Hundreds of 1-star reviews tanked the movie’s ratings before more than a few critics and early screeners were able to look Eternals. The immense majority of these reviews targeted the fact that Eternals features a homosexual kiss between Phastos and his husband, Ben (Haaz Sleiman).

'Eternals' is Marvel's weakest film in years, but at least it finally gets LGBTQ+ representation right

One of Marvel's most ambitious movies in years is also one of its weakest since "Thor: The Dark World."

"Eternals" boasts A-listers from Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek to Kumail Nanjiani and the film applications some of Marvel's most shocking moments. Unfortunately, much of the talent is underutilized in this stacked cast.

Directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao ("Nomadland"), the film stumbles for the first hour as several plotlines in the movie compete to be the main star.

From the begin, we're introduced to 10 super-powered beings, a group called Eternals, who were sent to Soil 7,000 years ago to defeat a monstrous group established as Deviants and help mankind thrive. Each Eternal is bestowed with a unique set of gifts, including flight, laser beams, brute strength, super speed, and the might to heal, among others.

From the grand opening fight sequence, it looks enjoy the Eternals would have been handy in a lot of the previous MCU battles. Conveniently, the group was told not to interfere with any human dilemmas — like taking on Thanos — unless does eternals have lgbtq
