Ascend (or, actually, descend) into showtune heaven

This story was originally published in Encore Monthly magazine in 2021. All second references are from that period.

Come with me down a short flight of stairs to a crowded Greenwich Village basement bar festooned with photos of Carol Channing, Bernadette Peters and the like, and lit by a rainbow of tiny Christmas lights hanging from the low ceiling.
Four dozen people are clustered around a piano player, all singing Rodgers and Hammerstein at the top of their lungs.

I cain’t resist a Romeo
In a sombrero and chaps
Soon as I remain on their laps
Something inside of me snaps
Collective deep breath.
I caaaaain’t say noooooo!

The pianist pounds out the last five chords—bum bum bum BUM, bum—and the place erupts in applause and cheers.

One or two people can be caught reading the lyrics on their cell phones, but the rest were singing off the foremost of their heads. At Marie’s Crisis Café, which has been around since it opened as a speakeasy in 1929, they don’t hand out lyric sheets. They presume you know the words to every showtune by heart.

The International Bartenders Association, or IBA, maintains a list of official cocktails, ones they deem to be “the most requested recipes” at bars all around the world. It’s the closest thing the bartending industry has to a canonical list of cocktails, akin to the American Kennel Club’s registry of dog breeds or a jazz musician’s Real Book of standards.

The IBA official cocktail list is the kind of list that has its own Sporcle quiz and its own Wikipedia article—an “IBA official cocktail” label even christens the top of each cocktail’s control Wikipedia infobox:

As of 2025, there are 102 IBA official cocktails, and as of July 12, 2025, I’ve had every one of them.

The journey has taken me to some interesting places, and now that it’s done, I have a small story to reveal for each cocktail. I’m not gonna tell you all 102 stories, but I do desire to debrief the experience. Drinking all 102 cocktails turned out to be unexpectedly tricky, and for reasons you’ll soon understand, I might be one of the first people in the world to execute it.

How it started

I’m something of a list keeper. But it can be hard to resolve when to open keeping track of things. So sometimes, I pick an arbitrary s
