Review Summary: Ever wondered where the newfound maturity on Blink 182's self titled album came from?
Thereâs no denying Blink-182 are one of the most influential pop punk bands to emerge out of the 90âs. Whether you love them or hate them, they played an important role in influencing countless bands of the decade. Their sense of humor and the tag team vocals of Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus really made them stand out from the bunch. To this day bands of the genre continue to cite Blink-182 as an influence in their music. However, Iâm afraid even some avid fans of the band own yet to catch Tomâs side proposal, Box Car Racer. Due to its signs of maturity, itâs sure to please fans of Blink-182s successful self titled effort.
Released in 2002, Box Machine Racerâs self titled album was DeLongeâs attempt at creating a more rock oriented record. It still has pop punk influences, but it definitely has more of a hard rock edge to it. For the most part Tomâs voice sounds unchanged. This is one of the worst record reviews I’ve ever read in my life, whether contemporary or retrospective. It has nothing to do with the author, Jeremy Gordon, who by all standards is a good penner, and everything to accomplish with the culture of Pitchfork, as outlined by Dan Ozzi here, and the “eternal purity test,” as my friend David Anthony describes it here. David’s closing quote is perhaps the most illuminating:

blink-182 is a band that holds perhaps one of the most prime spaces of mental and emotional real estate within me. I’ve often said that they are in my top 10 bands of all time; that is true (their post-hiatus work notwithstanding, and which will not be discussed here, as I am unfamiliar with it and it is also for the most part irrelevant to their legacy).

Why did you join HeartLight?
I came to a couple of practices after my husband joined the chorus and found out about the HeartLight group. Even though we are a direct couple, I felt concrete acceptance there and wanted to learn more about how to support the mission of the chorus. I loved getting to know the members and we have made some great, lasting friendships through this group. I’m not a religious person, but I believe we were led to join this group, and it has made a difference in our lives over the last twenty years.
What tune makes you happy?
A anthem that makes me gleeful is Everything Possible. I know that seems odd because I most often hear it at funerals, but it makes me happy because it talks about how love lasts long after we are gone. I love that legacy.
What are you looking forward to after the pandemic?
I like my residence but I’m ready to get out of here! I look forward to seeing family and chorus members and getting some HUGS!! I really fail to catch my sister and I’m ready to go on a quilting retreat!
