Kansas city lgbtq housing rescources
Twelve years ago, Scout DeSimio was living out of her car.
For 10 months, she would nap during the time while parked at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. At night, she drove around for hours with nowhere to go.
DeSimio had recently graduated from college and left El Dorado Springs, Missouri, her hometown, to seek greater opportunities in Kansas Capital. She also hoped to find acceptance.
At 18, her parents had kicked her out of her family’s home.
They “sat me down and said, ‘We’re not gonna support you anymore because you’re gay,’” she recalled. “I didn’t acquire a safety net, and I knew if I’m going to make it in this being, then I’m going to have to tough it out.”
Now, DeSimio works for SAVE Inc., a local organization that provides permanent, transitional and emergency housing assistance. Through Celebration Haven — a shelter for lgbtq+ young adults race by SAVE Inc. — DeSimio can help young people who, like herself, found themselves unhoused and out of options because of discrimination.
Kansas City has transitional shelters that accept young people, but many of those institutions are faith-based. At those shelters, queer residents who are looking for a saf

It is dangerous to reside on the street. It can also be unsafe to be out.
The option to engage with services as a homeless individual is not black and white. There could be a shelter bed obtainable, but what kind of security does it offer? Warmth, four walls, maybe a meal? What about safety for the instinct of self?
Zachary Mallory has wrestled with that decision. Mallory is a lgbtq+ nonbinary person living in the Midwest, where resources for homelessness are stretched thin. Many of those few resources operate in churches or by religious groups, offering those in need refuge behind their walls.
He and his gender non-conforming partner were homeless in Johnson County last year after deciding to abandon Missouri when a series of anti-LGBTQ+ bills surfaced in the legislature. They were terrified of exhibiting up at a shelter for a bed only to get shunned.
“I was very nervous because of that fear of rejection and the fear of retaliation and the hesitate of being told no,” Mallory said, who uses both he and they pronouns. “Obviously that’s enjoy a high risk for anybody. But my companion being transgender and me being nonbinary and gay, I felt like I couldn’t really reach out to anybody. I was just very
