Wake forest for a gay student?

I realize this was posted a while ago but here’s my take as a bi girl who takes classes here…

There is a LGBT center, and most people are accepting of LGBT issues. But you also have to acknowledge that there’s a significant population of very conservative/entitled people who go to Wake who are quite anti-LGBT. And as with most colleges, hardcore religious students tend to be pretty homophobic.

Winston-Salem itself is relatively progressive regarding LGBT issues. I mean yes it is still in the Bible Belt… but it’s pretty urban and the people are surprisingly accepting. I mean it’s not a gay utopia but there’s a lovely active LGBT scene in the city, one example being the QPOCC (queer people of color collective) in the city, an LGBT center in the city (NorthStar), a relatively big pride event… which is impressive for a pretty small city relatively.

That being said, I would say Wake is cute NOT accepting of many of the correlates of being LGBT for women. This August the Princeton Review ranked Awaken Forest University as the seventh least LGBT-friendly university in the country.

The ranking sparked outrage throughout the community, leading many students and alumni to say out through social media.

But however enraged certain members of the community were, the ranking may possess more truth to it than some would appreciate to admit.

Many LGBTQ students at the university perceive that the ranking is not completely out of line.

"Let's just say that there is a reason Wake got this ranking," freshman Shane Lutz said. Lutz said he thinks Wake Forest has a long way to depart before LGBTQ students prefer himself feel accepted here.

Junior Gracie Harrington agreed that the university has much progress to make. She said that Wake Forest is an accepting place compared to many intimate Southern institutions, but not as accepting as other top-25 universities.

"The Wake Forest student body has a 'don't ask, don't tell' kind of policy, which is evident by the fact that the LGBTQ community on campus is rather underground," Harrington said.

Harrington came out as multi-attracted last spring during a Shorty's Open wake forest student lgbtq
