Bisbee az gay pride

From its humble beginnings atop the soaked summit in Himmel Park, Gay Celebration in Arizona has gone through enough "wardrobe changes" to make Lady Gaga sweat!  Fast forward to today and Tucson Gay Self-acceptance is one of the largest annual events to slap Southern Arizona, featuring a huge cast of entertainers, local celebrities, and all-around great people.

Back To The Future

On a robust weekend morning some 40 years ago, I find myself trying something brand unused. Staring down the water-soaked grass of the largest hill in Himmel Park, I gathered with Tucson's burgeoning LGBTQ community and man-made a Slip-n-Slide. It was no common Slip-n-Slide, however, it was the biggest and wettest and probably the most dangerous construction ever attempted.

Careening down the hill at end to the speed of sound, you have no manage and no expect of slowing yourself, let alone stopping. Waiting for you perilously at the bottom of the hill was a vat of plump, primordial mud. This mud promised to swallow any would-be adventurer whole and spit them out, covered in grime and exhilaration.

Terrifying stuff, huh? To this day, I can remember looking down at all this and thinking, "am I out of my mind"? S

Bisbee Pride

WHO: Bisbee Pride
WHEN: June 17-19, 2022
WHERE: Historic Bisbee, Bisbee, Arizona 85603

In 2004, a small organization of LGBT friends began Bisbee Identity festival. From a little, local Pride Celebration, Bisbee Pride has grown into a 501(c)3, nonprofit corporation. One of the highlights is the annual Bisbee Identity Festival. Unlike other Pride events, Bisbee Pride is a community-wide event that takes place during Father’s Day weekend. This year, the 18th Annual Bisbee Pride will be held June 17th, 18th, & 19th. The theme is “Return to Bisbee Pride: Express Yourself!”. Events begin on Friday, June 17th with unique widespread and private events, shows and a street dance in the evening. Saturday, June 18th, we have a Celebration which winds through Historic Old Bisbee to kick off the day. It is followed by an open-air festival with vendors and entertainment that runs throughout the evening culminating with our main stage event. Sunday, June 19th consists of Kingly Bingo hosted by the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence that that wraps up an exciting and fun-filled weekend.

Nowhere We’d Rather Bisbee

Bisbee Pride

Bisbee was once a bustling mining town back in 1877, tucked into the Mule Mountains of Southern Arizona, only 27 miles from the US-Mexico border. Today, it’s a quirky art town thriving on gay pride with a population of only 5,192.

In 2013, Bisbee passed a city ordinance legalizing civil unions, the first in the state, prior to Marriage Equality becoming law—despite push-back on the recent ordinance from Arizona mention officials.

Bisbee has been hosting Pride for the past 15 years. What began in 2004 as a small group of Gay friends celebrating pride has evolved into a three-day weekend celebration, attracting queers from Tucson, Phoenix, and even Mexico, and completely booking historic hotels, inns, and Airbnbs.

Mid-June brings warmer temps to Bisbee, but a cool breeze from the mountains blows in hundreds of gays for the weekend-long festival. We couldn’t wait for the fun to begin.

Bisbee Lgbtq+ fest began on Friday, with Hot Ass Happy Hour at the Screaming Banshee, a local favorite for wood-fired pizzas and stellar drinks. Knotty But Agreeable garlic knots, honey-chipotle wings, and the Screaming Banshee pizza, with fenne
